A sled, sledge, or sleigh is a ground vehicles that slide over the surface, usually of ice or snow. It is built with a smooth underside or a separate body, supported by two or more smooth, relatively narrow longitudinal sliders, in principle similar to skis. This reduces the amount of friction that helps to carry heavy loads.

Some designs are used to transport passengers or goods on relatively flat terrain. Others are designed for recreation, especially by children or from competitions. (Compare over rough terrain with its downhill cousin.) The nuances of meaning, distinguishing between these three terms, often reflect regional differences depending on historical usage and the prevailing climate.

In American usage sled remains a generic term, but often imply smaller devices often used for recreation. Sledge mean heavier sledges used to move loads or massive objects.

In Australia, where there is limited snow, sledge and sleigh are equally preferred in the local parlance.
