A stairwell, stairway, flight of stairs, staircase, or simply a stairs is a structure designed to overcome a large vertical distance, dividing it into smaller vertical distances, called steps. The stairs can be straight, round, or consist of two or more straight parts connected at an angle.

Special types of stairs include escalators and stairs. Some alternatives to stairs are elevators (also called lifts), stair doors, and inclined escalators. A stairstep or staircase is one step of a flight of stairs. In buildings, a staircase is a complete flight of stairs between two floors. A flight of stairs is a step or steps between landings. A stairway or staircase is one or more staircases that lead from one floor to another and includes landings, newel posts, handrails, balustrades and additional parts. A staircase is a compartment that runs vertically through the building in which the stairs are located. Staircase halls are staircases, landings, corridors or other parts of the common hall, through which you must pass when moving from the entrance floor to other floors of the building. Box stairs are stairs built between walls, usually without support, with the exception of wall strings.

Stairs can be straight and lead from one floor to another without turning or changing direction. The staircase can change direction, usually from two straight flights connected at a 90 degree angle. The stairs can also return to itself by landing at a 180-degree angle at each end of a straight span, forming a vertical stairs commonly used in multi-story buildings and highrise buildings. Many variations of the geometric staircase can be formed by circular, elliptical and irregular designs.

The staircase can be an obligatory component of the exit from buildings and structures. Stairs are also provided for easy access to floors, roofs, levels and pedestrian surfaces that are otherwise inaccessible. A staircase can also be a fancy physical structure, such as a staircase that go nowhere situated at Winchester Mystery House. A staircase is also an object used in art to represent real or imagined places built around impossible objects using geometric distortions, as in the work of the artist M.C. Escher.

Railings can be continuous (sometimes called an adpost) or from post to post (or more accurately, from newel-to-newel). For continuous handrails on long balconies, there may be many new designs and tandem end caps covering the newels. There are quarter turn caps in the corners.
