An SUV or sports utility vehicle is a car classification that combines elements of passenger cars on the road with features from off-road features such as increased ground clearance and four-wheel drive.

There is no universally agreed-upon definition of an SUV, and the use of this term varies from country to country. Some reports state that an SUV should be built on a light-truck chassis; however, any vehicle with an off-road design is considered an SUV in broader definitions. Crossover SUV is often defined as an SUV built with a single structure (like in cars), but crossovers are called SUVs in many cases. In some countries, such as the United States, SUVs are classified as “light trucks,” resulting in more lenient regulations than cars.

The predecessors of SUVs date back to the military and small-scale models of the late 1930s and carts and four-wheel drive vehicles, which began to be introduced in 1949. The Cherokee Jeep since 1984 (XJ) is considered the first modern SUV. Some SUVs produced today use a one-piece design; however, more SUVs have used body structure in the past.

In the late 1990s and early 2000s, the popularity of SUVs increased significantly, often due to the popularity of large sedans and station wagons. Smaller SUVs, midsize SUVs, and crossovers have become increasingly popular in recent years. SUVs are currently the largest automotive segment in the world, accounting for 36.8% of the global passenger car market in 2017. There is no universally accepted definition of an SUV. Dictionaries, automotive experts, and journalists use different formulations and defining characteristics in addition to regional differences in use by both the media and the general public. The auto industry hasn’t settled on one definition of an SUV either.

The actual term “SUV” was not widely used in the late 1980s – until then, and such vehicles were marketed as four-wheel drive vehicles, jeeps, station wagons, or other monikers. British English uses the terms “usually four-four-four” (often abbreviated as “4×4”), “jeep,” or “SUV” instead of an SUV.

However, in recent years, the term “SUV” has become dominant in the United Kingdom.

Collins’ English Dictionary defines an SUV as “a powerful four-wheel-drive vehicle that can be driven over rough terrain. The abbreviation SUV is often used”. In Europe, the term SUV is commonly used to refer to road vehicles. “Four-by-four” or car brand is widely used for SUVs. Likewise, SUVs are commonly referred to as “four-wheel drives” in New Zealand instead of SUVs. In Europe, the SUV can also be classified in the G/J-segment.
