For ages, the people of London have tried quality life in their playwrights, poems and books or through theatrical performances. Theatrical performances have also shown their creativity and also depicted their glorious culture and history. However, the theatres were not the product of the English. They have existed since the time of ancient Egypt. In England, the concept of theatre developed in medieval times under the Romans. Since then, theatres in England have undergone great changes. Today the theatre is mainly dominated by realism and classical English drama.

In London, you can have the chance to attend various theatrical performances based on political or spiritual philosophies. The majority of London’s theatres are located in and around “theatre land”, that is, Shaftesbury Avenue, the Strand and the nearby streets of the West End. Most of these theatres are receiving houses and present mainly dramatic plays produced by the Royal National Theatre and the Royal Shakespeare Company. They don’t have their own theatrical production.

Some of the popular theatres in the West End include:

The Adelphi Theatre stands on the Strand in the city of Westminster. The 1500-seat West End theatre was established in 1806 by John Scott and his daughter Jane as “Sans Pareil”. In 1809 the theatre was given the license for musical performances, pantomime and burletta. It has undergone numerous renovations under different management and is now owned and managed by the Adelphi Theatre Company Ltd.
