Tokyo officially Tokyo Metropolis, is the capital and most populous prefecture of Japan. The prefecture, located at the top of Tokyo Bay, is part of the Kantō region on the central Pacific coast of the main Japanese island of Honshu. Tokyo is the political and economic center of the country and the seat of the Japanese emperor and the national government. In 2019, 13,929,280 people lived in the prefecture. The Greater Tokyo Area is the most populous city in the world, with a population of over 37.393 million by 2020.

Originally a fishing village called Edo, the city became a famous political center in 1603 when it became the seat of the Tokugawa shogunate. By the mid-18th century, Edo was one of the most populous cities in the world, with a population of over one million. After the shogunate in 1868, the imperial capital of Kyoto was moved to the city, which was renamed Tokyo (literally “eastern capital”). Tokyo was devastated by the great Kanto earthquake of 1923 and again by Allied bombing during World War II. Beginning in the 1950s, the city underwent rapid reconstruction and expansion, leading to post-war economic recovery in Japan. Since 1943, the Metropolitan Government in Tokyo has governed 23 special divisions of the prefectures (formerly Tokyo City), various cities in the western zone, and two outlying island chains.

Tokyo is the largest urban economy in the world in terms of gross domestic product and belongs to the Alpha+ cities category of the Globalization and Global Cities Research Network. Part of an industrial region that includes the cities of Yokohama, Kawasaki, and Chiba, Tokyo is Japan’s leading center for business and finance. In 2019, 36 Fortune Global 500 companies participated in it. In 2020, it ranked third in the Global Financial Centers Index after New York City and London.

The city has hosted a number of international events, including the 1964 Summer Olympics and three G7 Summits (1979, 1986, and 1993); It was also planned to host the 2020 Summer Olympics, which were postponed due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Tokyo is an international center for research and development and is represented by several major universities, in particular the University of Tokyo. Tokyo Station is the central hub of the Japanese Shinkansen bullet train system, and the city is served by an extensive rail and subway network. Notable districts of Tokyo include Chiyoda (home to the Imperial Palace), Shinjuku (administrative center of the city), and Shibuya (commercial and business center)
