Anthony Edward Stark is a character portrayed by Robert Downey Jr. in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) film franchise – based on the Marvel Comics character of the same name – commonly known by his alter ego, Iron Man. In the movies, Stark is an industrialist, inventor of genius, hero and former playboy who is CEO of Stark Industries. At the start of the series, he is a chief weapons manufacturer in the United States military, until he has a change of heart and redirects his technical knowledge to the creation of mechanized armor which he used to defend against those who would threaten peace around the world.

In 2019, the character was one of the central figures of the MCU, appearing in eleven films from his introduction in Iron Man, to Spider-Man: Far From Home. In 2015, the evolution of the character over the series was described as “the defining arc of the Marvel cinematic universe”. In 2018, it was argued that “no other character follows a journey as transformative as Iron Man”. The character of Iron Man and the performance of Downey have been credited with helping to cement the MCU as a multi-billion dollar franchise, with Stark often being referred to as “the godfather of the Marvel Cinematic Universe” and one of the greatest movie characters of all time.

Tony Stark was first created as a comic book character in Tales of Suspense #39 (cover dated March 1963), a collaboration between editor and writer Stan Lee, writer Larry Lieber, writer Don Heck and cover artist and character -design Jack Kirby. Lee wanted to create the “capitalist par excellence”, a character who would go against the spirit of the time and the readership of Marvel. Lee based the looks and personality of this playboy on Howard Hughes, explaining, “Howard Hughes was one of the most colorful men of our time. He was an inventor, an adventurer, a multi-billionaire, a ladies’ man and finally a nut.

The character’s original costume was a bulky gray armored suit, replaced by a golden version in the second story (number 40, April 1963), and redesigned as more elegant and red and golden armor in the number 48 (December 1963) by Steve Ditko. Lee and Kirby included Iron Man in The Avengers # 1 (September 1963) as a founding member of the superhero team. In the mid-2000s, with a number of films made from other Marvel properties licensed to other studios, Kevin Feige realized that Marvel still had the rights to the core members of the Avengers, including Iron Man.
