Toothless is a Night Fury that appears in the How To Train Your Dragon franchise. He is a 21-year-old male Night Fury. Toothless, the last known Night Fury, is Hiccup Horrendous Haddock III’s dragon mount and greatest friend, as well as the current ruler of the dragons in and around the Barbaric Archipelago and on Berk.

Since Toothless is the only Night Fury shown in the franchise thus far, studying his physical appearance is the only way to understand Night Fury’s anatomy. He possesses jet-black scales covering his whole body, with little bright patches on his sides and wings in a pattern similar to that of a manta ray. However these patches were eliminated in the second and third films, making his darker coloration more even. Toothless has two pairs of wings (one main pair and one smaller pair near the base of his tail). He can accomplish a vertical takeoff with the first pair. Behind him are a pair of tiny wings that let him glide. He used to have two natural tail fins at the end of his tail that helped with steering and stability, but he is missing the left side of his tail fin, which he lost when Hiccup used his Mangler to take Toothless down. Hiccup eventually replaces it with a mechanical fin that he builds himself. As a result, he is frequently seen wearing the fin and its matching saddle.

Toothless has a massive scar on his right shoulder/neck about a foot in length and an inch in width. Toothless has vivid green eyes, which can be acid or emerald in color. They’re right in front of his eyes, providing him great depth awareness and reflexes in flight. When threatened or agitated, he may shrink his pupils to slits, akin to a cat. His pupils dilate and become more dog-like when he is docile or delighted. His ability to withdraw his teeth earned him the nickname Toothless.

The spines on his head and forelegs are somewhat longer in How to Train Your Dragon 2. On his lower jaw, he has three sets of additional plates sprouting. He also has a series of elongated spines running down his back, which let him turn in confined spaces. Valka disclosed them to Toothless, who was unaware of them. Apart from that, he looks just as he did in the previous picture. Toothless has also become a lot more playful since first meeting Hiccup. Valka also reveals that Toothless and Hiccup are the same age. This might be one of the reasons why the two get along so well.

Toothless has blue marks on his back, fins, spines, and forehead that illuminate Alpha state due to the fire. His nostrils and the back of his throat both blaze.

Toothless wore armor constructed from the Screaming Death’s scales by Hiccup and Snotlout in “Night of the Hunters, Part 2.” Toothless, despite his size, could evade the Dragon Hunter’s shots.
