Umbrella, as we know it today, is mainly a device to keep people dry in the rain or snow. Its original purpose was to shade people from the sun, a feature that is still reflected in the word “umbrella” (derived from the French parare “to protect” and sol “sun”) the smaller size of the umbrella used mainly by women.
Materials used for the manufacture of umbrellas, of course improved over the years. One of the most important innovations came in early 1850, when Samuel Fox conceived the idea of using a “U” shaped steel rods ribs and stretchers to make lighter, stronger frame. Earlier, the British umbrellas were made from either cane or whalebone. Modern rain umbrella made from fabrics such as nylon, which can withstand the drenching rain, easily folded, and are available in various colors and designs.
