A vehicle is a machine that transports people or goods. Vehicles include wagons, bicycles, motor vehicles (motorcycles, cars, trucks, buses), rail vehicles (trains, trams), watercraft (ships, boats), amphibious vehicles (propeller-driven vehicles, moves), aircraft (airplanes, helicopters ) and spacecraft.

Ground vehicles are broadly classified depending on whether they are used to apply control and driving forces to the ground: wheeled, tracked, rail, or skied. ISO 3833-1977 is a standard also used in international law for types, terms, and definitions of road vehicles. More than 1 billion bicycles are used worldwide. In 2002, there were about 590 million cars and 205 million motorcycles in the world. At least 500 million Chinese Flying Pigeon bicycles were produced, more than a single model of vehicle. The most-produced model is the Honda Super Cub, which sold 60 million units in 2008. The most-produced car model is the Toyota Corolla, with a production volume of at least 35 million produced by 2010. The most common fixed-wing aircraft is the Cessna 172, with an estimated 44,000 production since 2017. The Soviet Mil Mi-8, at 17,000, is the most-produced helicopter. The best commercial aircraft is the Boeing 737; in 2018, there were about 10,000 of them.

It is very important that the vehicle has a power source to drive it. Energy can be extracted from external sources, for example, in the case of a sailboat, a solar-powered car, or an electric tram that uses overhead lines. In addition, energy can be stored provided that it can be converted on-demand, and the storing medium’s and storage power density are sufficient to meet the needs of the vehicle.

Human strength is a simple source of energy that requires nothing more than a person. Although social power cannot exceed 500 W (0.67 hp) for significant periods of time, the land speed record for human-powered vehicles (unchanged) is 133 km/h (83 mph) as of 2009 on a recumbent bicycle.

The most common type of energy source is fuel. External combustion engines can use almost anything that burns as fuel, while internal combustion engines and rocket engines are designed to burn a specific fuel, usually gasoline, diesel, or ethanol.

Batteries are another common energy carrier, which offers advantages such as responsiveness, usefulness over a wide range of power levels, environmental friendliness, efficiency, ease of installation, and maintenance. Batteries also make electric motors easier to use, which has its advantages. On the other hand, batteries have a low energy density, short lifespan, poor performance at extreme temperatures, long charging times, and difficulty in disposal (although they can usually be recycled). Like fuel, batteries store chemical energy and can cause burns and poisoning in the event of an accident. Batteries also lose their effectiveness over time.
