Warframe is a free-to-play cooperative third-person shooter video game developed and released by Digital Extremes. Originally released for Microsoft Windows in March 2013, it was later ported to PlayStation 4, Xbox One and Nintendo Switch. In Warframe, players control the members of Tenno, a race of ancient warriors who for centuries have been waking up with the help of cryospies to be in a war in the planetary system of various factions.

Initial release date: 25 March 2013
Director(s): Steve Sinclair; Scott McGregor
Developer: Digital Extremes
Engine: Evolution
Producer(s): Dave Kudirka; Pat Kudirka
Platforms: PlayStation 4, Nintendo Switch, Xbox One, Microsoft Windows

Tenno uses his powerful warframes along with powerful weapons and mission completion abilities. Although many game missions use levels generated by processes, newer updates include larger open areas, like other multiplayer online games, and some missions for specific missions that do not use procedural generations. The game features shooting and melee, parkour and role-playing, allowing players to improve their character with the help of improved equipment.

Warframe concepts have been introduced into Digital Extremes since 2000 under the name Dark Sector. The company once again introduced Dark Sector in 2004 as a preparation for the launch of next-generation consoles, but could not find a publisher because of its theme. In the end, Digital Extremes released a game called Dark Sector in 2008, very different from their original plan. By 2012, looking at the success of free-to-play games, the developers took their earlier ideas and artistic assets from Dark Sector to portray it as Warframe.

Initially, the growth of Warframe was slow, restrained by moderate critical reviews and a small number of players. However, since its launch, the game has developed positively thanks to the development of digital extreme games over the years. In 2019, about 50 million players took part in the game, and now it is one of the most successful Digital Extremes games, receiving most of the developers’ attention by introducing new content and game modes. The game is supported by microtransactions that allow the player to buy items in the real-money game that would otherwise be obtained by grinding.
