The X-Men are a team of fictional mutant superheroes appearing in American comic books published by Marvel Comics. Created by artist / co-writer Jack Kirby and writer Stan Lee, the characters first appeared in The X-Men # 1 (September 1963) and formed one of the most recognizable and successful Marvel Comics franchises, appearing in many books, TV shows, films, and video games.

Most X-Men are mutants, a subspecies of humans born with superhuman abilities activated by the X-gene. The X-Men fight for peace and equality between normal humans and mutants in a world where anti-mutant fanaticism is violent and widespread. They are led by Charles Xavier, also known as Professor X, a powerful mutant telepath who can control and read minds. Their sworn enemy is Magneto, a powerful mutant capable of manipulating and controlling magnetic fields, who leads the Brotherhood of Mutants. Both have opposite views and philosophies regarding the relationship between mutants and humans. While the former work for peace and understanding between mutants and humans, the latter view humans as a threat and believe in an aggressive approach against them, although from time to time it turns out to be working with the X-Men.

Professor X is the founder of the Xavier School for Gifted Youngsters in a place commonly referred to as the X-Mansion, which recruits mutants from all over the world to teach them how to use their powers and coexist with humanity. Located in Salem Center, Westchester County, New York, the X-Mansion is the home and training ground of the X-Men. The five main members of the X-Men who appear in X-Men # 1 (September 1963): Angel Archangel, Beast, Cyclops, Iceman, and Jean Grey (as Marvel Girl) Professors X and Magneto also first appeared in The X-Men #1, and were later joined by new members such as Havok, Polaris, Mimic, and Changeling, but only the first of them managed to become permanent recurring members of the team. Eventually, the X-Men roster expanded to include a wide variety of members from different walks of life, including Wolverine, Storm, Rogue, Gambit, Jubilee, Nightcrawler, Colossus, Kitty Pryde/Shadowcat, Psylocke, Forge, Longshot and Bishop. Since then, dozens of mutants from different countries and of different origins, and even a number of non-mutants have become members of the X-Men.

In early X-Men issues, they featured the original team of Cyclops, Marvel Girl, Beast, Angel, and Iceman, as well as their nemesis Magneto and his brotherhood of evil mutants starring Mastermind, Quicksilver (Magneto’s son), Scarlet Witch (Magneto’s daughter) and Toad. The comic focuses on the general human theme of good and evil, and later includes storylines and themes of prejudice and racism that continue in one form or another throughout the series.
