0 (zero) is the number and numerical digit used to denote this number in numerals. Like zero, it means nothing – the absence of other values. It plays a central role in mathematics as an element of the identity of numbers, real numbers and many other algebraic structures. As a zero digit, the value of the systems is used as a placeholder in place value systems. Historically, this was the last figure to use. In English, zero can also be called nil when the number, o/oh, when a numeral, and nought/naught in either context.

0 is an integer preceding positive 1, and follows -1. In most (if not all) digital systems, 0 was identified before the idea of ”|negative integers” was accepted.

While mathematicians take zero as a number, some non-mathematics say that a zero is not a number, arguing that a person cannot have zero of something. Others believe that if you have a zero bank balance, you have a certain amount of money in your account, namely, no one. This is the last opinion accepted by mathematicians and most others.

Almost all historians skip the zero year from the proleptic Gregorian and Julian calendars, but astronomers include them in the same calendars. However, the phrase Year Zero can be used to describe any event that is so significant that it actually begins to recalculate time.
