A man is an adult male human. Until the age of majority, a man is called a boy. Like most other male mammals, the male genome usually inherits the X chromosome from his mother and the Y chromosome from his father. A male fetus generally produces more androgens and less estrogen than a female fetus. This difference in the relative amounts of these sex steroids is largely responsible for the physiological differences that distinguish men from women. During puberty, hormones which stimulate the production of androgens lead to the development of secondary sex characteristics, thereby exhibiting significant gender differences. However, for some transgender and intersex people, there are exceptions to the above.

In humans, the sex of a person is determined during fertilization by the genetic material transferred into the sperm cell. If a sperm carrying an X chromosome fertilizes an egg, the offspring are usually female (XX). On the other hand, if a sperm carrying the Y chromosome fertilizes an egg, the offspring are usually male (XY). People whose anatomy or chromosomal shape differs from this model are called intersex.

Humans exhibit sexual dimorphism in many characteristics, many of which are not directly related to reproductive ability, although most of these characteristics play a role in sexual desire. Most of the manifestations of sexual dimorphism in humans are manifested in height, weight and body structure, although there are always examples that do not fit the general pattern. For example, males are generally taller than females, but many people of either sex are of average height for their species.

Primary sexual characteristics (or genitals) are characteristics that are present at birth and are an integral part of the reproductive process. In men, the main characteristics of sex are the penis and testicles. Secondary sex characteristics are characteristics that appear in people during puberty. Such features are especially evident in sex-dimorphic phenotypic traits that distinguish sex but unlike primary sexual characteristics are not directly part of the reproductive system. The male reproductive system includes the external and internal genitals. Male external genitalia is made up of the penis, male urethra, and scrotum, while male internal genitalia is made up of the testes, prostate, epididymis, seminal vesicle, vas deferens, ejaculatory canal, and bulbourethral gland.
