Pterophyllum is a small genus of freshwater fish in the Cichlidae family known to most hobbyists as an angelfish. All Pterophyllum species come from the Amazon Basin, Orinoco Basin, and various rivers in the Guiana Shield in tropical South America. The three Pterophyllum species have an unusual shape for cichlids, strongly laterally compressed, with rounded bodies and elongated triangular dorsal and anal fins. This body shape allows them to hide among roots and plants, often on a vertical surface. Naturally occurring angelfish are often striped across, a coloration that provides additional camouflage. Angelfish are ambushed by predators and hunt small fish and macroinvertebrates. All Pterophyllum species form monogamous pairs. Eggs are usually laid on a sunken log or flattened leaf. As with other cichlids, broom grooming is highly developed.

Angelfish are native to much of tropical South America, including much of the Amazon River system. In their natural habitat, they are found almost exclusively in calm, slow water. In the wild, they prefer dimly lit areas, under overhanging vegetation or among trees that have fallen into the river.

Captive angelfish accept a wide variety of water conditions, although they prefer slightly warmer water. The pH must be between 6.8 and 7.8, with a hardness of 3° to 8° dKH (54 to 145 ppm). The temperature is best maintained between 78° and 84° F. Maintain good filtration and change the water 10% weekly or 25% every other week with an Aqueon Aquarium Water Changer or Siphon Vacuum Gravel Cleaner. Don’t forget to get your tap water with Aqueon Water Conditioner before filling your tank!

Angelfish grow quite large and will require a 55 gallon tank or more to grow fully. Tall aquariums are best for adapting their body shape. The flow of water should be gentle and the decor should include large deciduous plants and twigs placed vertically to simulate fallen branches and trees. You can also add some floating plants to provide shade and cover. The substrate should be fine to medium, smooth, angel-like gravel to feed the bottom for food.
