Anime is Japanese for “animation” or “cartoon.” In Japan, anime is the word used for all animation. Outside Japan, the term anime refers to Japanese animation, which this article talks about.

Some anime are hand-drawn, but anime can also be created with CGI computer animation. There are many types of anime; you can find anime about sport, magic, or romance. These are just a few examples. Anime is shown on television, DVD, and VHS, and is used in video games. Also, some cartoons are just movies, but they have cartoon characters and animations instead of real people and places. The anime is often based on Japanese comics called manga and graphic novels. Sometimes live-action movies and TV series (no animation) are based on anime.

The history of anime began around 1900 when Japanese filmmakers tried to animate at the same time as the United States, Russia, Germany, and France.

The filmmakers in Japan didn’t have a lot of money to make their films and not a lot of places where they could make their films. The people that filmmakers could use as actors in their films were also a problem in making Japanese films. Japanese people are different from people in other parts of the world (for example, if the theme of the film was about the Vikings, Ancient Rome or the Black Death pandemic in medieval Europe, for example), and it was difficult for the filmmakers to make a film about places other than Japan with Japanese actors. The filmmakers liked the animation because then they could ask the animator to draw other places and people who couldn’t be filmed in a normal movie, and the animators could be very creative with the cartoons that they made.

During the 1970s, more and more people started to love manga. At the same time, the manga were used as a starting point to create anime with the same characters and stories.
