Armand Gustav “Mondo” Duplantis (born 10 November 1999) is a Swedish-American pole vaulter who holds the world outdoor and indoor records (6.21 metres (20 ft 4+12 in) and 6.22 metres (20 ft 5 in), as well as the Olympic and World outdoor and indoor titles, the European outdoor and indoor titles, and the Diamond League title. At the 2019 World Championships, he took silver. Duplantis is a two-time European champion, having won in 2018 and 2022, when he set the current world under-20 record. Indoors, he is a gold medallist from the 2022 World Indoor Championship and the 2021 European Indoor Championship.

Duplantis won gold at the 2015 World Youth Championships as a 15-year-old. He finished third at the World U20 Championships a year later. He won the European U20 title in 2017 and the World U20 title the following year. Duplantis has also won the Diamond League twice.

In 2018, he was named European and World Athletics Male Rising Star of the Year, and two years later, he was named World Male Athlete of the Year. Duplantis was named European and World Male Athlete of the Year for his 2022 season, which included breaking three world marks, becoming World indoor and outdoor champion, European and Diamond League champion, and clearing six meters or more 22 times. He had cleared six meters or higher 60 times as of February 2023, the most of any athlete in history.

Duplantis achieved national freshman records both indoors and outdoors as a freshman at Lafayette High School in 2015, earning him the title of Gatorade Louisiana Boys Track & Field Athlete of the Year. Duplantis, who is a dual citizen of the United States and Sweden, had the option of vaulting for either country internationally; in June 2015, it was revealed that he had chosen Sweden. Duplantis competed for the first time for Sweden at the 2015 World Youth Championships in Cali, Colombia, winning gold on countback with a first-attempt clearance of 5.30 m (17 ft 4+12 in), improving his personal best by two centimeters and setting a new championship record.

On February 6, 2016, Duplantis cleared 5.49 m (18 ft 0 in) at a high school meet in Baton Rouge, setting a new age-16 world record, world indoor youth record, and national high school indoor record; he was the first high school athlete to leap 18 feet indoors. Only one week later, Emmanouil Karalis of Greece, who was the same age as Duplantis, beat his world record with a 5.53 m (18 foot 1+12 in) vault.

Duplantis set the world indoor junior record of 5.75 m (18 ft 10+12 in) on February 11, 2017 at the Millrose Games. The IAAF approved that mark. A month later, at the New Balance National Scholastic Championships, he improved to 5.82 m (19 ft 1 in) at the same facility. Because of erroneous peg lengths, that mark was not validated. Duplantis jumped 5.90 m in the Nike Clyde Littlefield Texas Relays on April 1, 2017, breaking his own record and setting a new World Junior Record. The jump also set a new Swedish senior record by 3 centimeters (1 in). While the IAAF acknowledged the record with Duplantis representing Sweden, the USATF confirmed Duplantis’ mark as the American junior record on December 2, 2017.

Duplantis got off his 2023 campaign off to strong start at the Mondo Classic in Uppsala, the meet named after him. His winning height of 6.10 m (20 ft 0 in) was not only his best season opener, but also the highest season opener of any pole vaulter in history.

He also broke Bubka’s record of 11 vaults of at least 6.10 m. (including indoors and outdoors). Mondo broke the world record again on February 25 at the All Star Perche indoor meeting in Clermont-Ferrand, France, soaring clear at 6.22 m (20 ft 5 in) to bring his career total of six-metre-plus clearances to 60.
