The Medal of Honor (MOH) is the highest and most prestigious military medal that may be given by the United States Armed Forces to honor American service members who have distinguished themselves through acts of bravery. The medal is typically given out by the president of the United States, while it is occasionally incorrectly called the “Congressional Medal of Honor” since it is bestowed “in the name of the United States Congress.”

The medal comes in three different varieties: one for the Department of the Army, which is given to soldiers; one for the Department of the Navy, which is given to sailors, marines, and members of the coast guard; and one for the Department of the Air Force, which is given to airmen and guardians. The Department of the Army received the Medal of Honor in 1862, shortly after the Department of the Navy received it in 1861. Until they obtained their own unique version in 1965, the Department of the Air Force utilized the Department of the Army’s version. The oldest continually awarded combat medal of the American Armed Forces is the Medal of Honor. The Medal of Honor is normally awarded by the president during a ceremonial ceremony meant to symbolize the gratitude of the American people, with posthumous awards presented to the immediate family members.

Since the inception of the medal, 3,530 Medals of Honor have been given to 3,511 individuals, with more than 40% of those awards being made for deeds during the American Civil War, according to the Medal of Honor Historical Society of the United States. Congress established March 25 as “National Medal of Honor Day” in 1990.
