A style of visual arts, architecture, and product designArt Deco”short for the French Arts Décoratifs”first debuted in France in the 1910s, soon before World War I, and thrived in the United States and Europe in the 1920s and 1930s. Art Deco has influenced bridges, buildings (from skyscrapers to cinemas), ships, ocean liners, trains, cars, trucks, buses, furniture, and common household items like radios and vacuum cleaners through styling and design of the exterior and interior of anything from large structures to small objects, as well as how people look (clothingfashion, and jewelry).

The 1925 Exposition internationale des arts décoratifs et industriels modernes (International Exhibition of Modern Decorative and Industrial Arts) in Paris is where the term “modern decorative and industrial arts” originated.

Modern designs, exquisite craftsmanship, and pricey materials were all integrated in Art Deco. In its prime, it stood for wealth, glitz, excitement, and optimism in societal and technical advancement.

The bold geometric shapes of Cubism and the Vienna Secession, the vivid colors of Fauvism and the Ballets Russes, the updated craftsmanship of Louis Philippe I and Louis XVI era furniture, and the exoticized styles of ChinaJapanIndia, Persia, ancient Egypt, and Maya art all had an impact on the development of Art Deco. It had great craftsmanship and rare, pricey materials like ebony and ivory. Monuments to the design include the Empire State BuildingChrysler Building, and other skyscrapers in New York City constructed in the 1920s and 1930s.

Art Deco was more muted during the Great Depression in the 1930s. Plastic, stainless steel, and chrome plating are among the new materials that have emerged. In the 1930s, Streamline Moderne, a more streamlined variation of the design, first arose. It featured curved shapes and polished, smooth surfaces. One of the first really global architectural movements was Art Deco, but when World War II got under way and the strictly utilitarian and unadorned contemporary architectural movements as well as the International Style of architecture that followed, it lost its sway.
