A barber’s pole is a particular sort of sign that barbers use to identify the location or store where they practice their trade. According to a custom that dates back to the Middle Ages, the trade sign is a staff or pole with a spiral of colorful stripes (often red and white in many countries, but usually red, white and blue in the United States). The stripes appear to be moving up or down the length of the pole rather than around it when the barber pole is rotating.
