Small, compact and hardy, the Beagles are active companions for children and adults. Dogs of this breed are funny and fun-loving dogs, but being dogs can also be stubborn and require patient, creative teaching methods. Their noses guide them through life, and they never become happier than when they follow an interesting smell. The Beagle was originally bred as an aroma to track small game, mainly rabbits and hare. It is still used for this purpose in many countries, including the United States.

It is difficult to resist the appeal of the dark brown or brown eyes of the Beagle with its soft appealing expression. They are happy, sociable and loving – the characteristics are more than balanced by their hound nature, which is curious, decisive and focused on food.

They are not yappy dogs, but they have three distinct vocalizations – barking / growling, sobbing and half howling (a cross between a crazy bark and a bay). The half-howl vocalization is usually held back when they catch sight of quarry — or think it’s time to wake up their neighbors at 6:00 a.m.! As dogs, they usually get along well with other animals and their human friends and believe that each of them is their new best friend.

The most important thing you need to know about the Beagle is that he is a scent-hound. His nose is the most important part of his anatomy, and his head is always down to ground, looking for an interesting trail to follow. The beagle has about 220 million taste buds, compared to the paltry 5 million or so in people, which makes it very good at choosing flavors.

You may have seen Beagle’s nose at airports across the country. In 1984, the U.S. Department of Agriculture decided to use a beagle to sniff out contraband food that were shipped to the United States at Los Angeles International Airport.

The experiment is a huge success. Being small, friendly and sweet, the Beagle did not intimidate people who are afraid of dogs, and with their superpower on their nose, they can be taught to recognize certain foods bypassing those who were not contraband.

Due to its small size and mild temperament, a beagle can do well in apartments if their people are willing to walk them several times a day in any weather conditions. They need a lot of exercise, about an hour a day, if possible. If left alone and not used, Beagles can become destructive.
