Benedict Timothy Carlton Cumberbatch CBE is an actor from the United Kingdom. He has earned several awards for his theater and film performances, including an Emmy Award, a BAFTA Award, and an Olivier Award. For his work in Frankenstein, Cumberbatch earned the Laurence Olivier Award for Best Actor in a Leading Role in a Play, as well as a Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Lead Actor in a Miniseries or Movie. He was nominated for an Academy Award, a BAFTA Award, a Screen Actors Guild Award, and a Golden Globe Award for his role in The Imitation Game (2014), all for Best Actor in a Leading Role.

He received a BAFTA TV Award for Best Actor in a Leading Role for his performance as Patrick Melrose in the five-part drama miniseries. In 2014, he was named to Time magazine’s annual list of the world’s 100 most important people, and in 2015, Queen Elizabeth II awarded him a CBE for services to the performing arts and charity in the 2015 Birthday Honours.

Cumberbatch earned a Master of Arts in Classical Acting from the London Academy of Music and Dramatic Art after graduating from Victoria University of Manchester. He began his career in Shakespearean plays at Regent’s Park’s Open Air Theatre, and made his West End debut in Richard Eyre’s revival of Hedda Gabler in 2005. He has since appeared in the Royal National Theatre plays After the Dance (2010) and Frankenstein (2011). He made his Barbican Theatre debut in the title role of Hamlet in 2015.

Cumberbatch’s television credits include his portrayal of Stephen Hawking in the 2004 television movie Hawking. From 2010 until 2017, he was most known for his portrayal of Sherlock Holmes in the BBC series Sherlock. He’s also starred in Tom Stoppard’s Parade’s End (2012), The Hollow Crown: The Wars of the Roses (2016), Patrick Melrose (2018), and Brexit: The Uncivil War (2018). (2019).

Cumberbatch has as William Pitt the Younger in Amazing Grace (2006), Khan in Star Trek Into Darkness (2013), William Prince Ford in 12 Years a Slave (2013), Julian Assange in The Fifth Estate (2013), and Alan Turing in The Imitation Game (2014). He also appeared in The Current War (2017), 1917 (2019), and The Courier, all historical plays (2020). He performed the roles of Smaug and Sauron in The Hobbit film series from 2012 to 2014 using voice and motion capture. In Marvel Studios’ Doctor Strange (2016), Thor: Ragnarok (2017), Avengers: Infinity War (2018), and Avengers: Endgame (2019), he played Dr. Stephen Strange; he is expected to reprise his roles in Spider-Man: No Way Home (2021) and Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness (2019).
