The cryptocurrency exchange Bitstamp is situated in Luxembourg. Trading between fiat money, bitcoin, and other cryptocurrencies is permitted. Deposits and withdrawals can be made in USD, EUR, GBP, EUR, ALGO, XRP, Litecoin, Bitcoin Cash, XLM, Link, OMG Network, USD Coin, or PAX.

The company was founded as a European-focused alternative to then-dominant bitcoin exchange Mt. Gox.

Nejc Kodri, the CEO of the business, is a well-known figure in the bitcoin world. He and Damijan Merlak co-founded it in Slovenia in August 2011 but later changed its registration to the UK in April 2013 and then to Luxembourg in 2016.

[nb 1] Bitstamp outsourced some of its activities to the UK because Slovenia lacked sufficient financial and legal services.

The firm sought advice from the UK’s Financial Conduct Authority while establishing in the country, but was informed that because bitcoin is not considered a currency, the exchange is not subject to regulation. According to Bitstamp, it instead controls its own regulation by adhering to a set of best practices to verify consumers and prevent money laundering. The corporation started requesting copies of account customers’ passports and legal documents proving their residence in September 2013.

In April 2018, Nexon was rumored to be in talks to purchase Bitstamp.
