The items used as shooting targets for pistol, rifle, shotgun, and other shooting sports, as well as for darts, target archery, crossbow shooting, and other non-firearm related activities, come in a variety of sizes and shapes. The bullseye is another name for the center.

For example, targets can be constructed of steel, rubber that “heals” itself, or paper. There are also electronic targets that may provide the shooter accurate feedback on where the shot was placed.

Given the military and hunting roots of the majority of shooting disciplines, it is not difficult to understand that many of the targets at one time or another initially resembled either human opponents in a battle or animals in a hunting situation. Nowadays, the majority of targets used in shooting sports are abstract figures, whose origins are frequently not given much thought. The well-known circular bullseye target, for instance, may have first resembled a human body or an animal that was being hunted.

The field targets used in Det frivillige Skyttervesen are notable examples of shooting targets with martial origins that are now regarded as abstract. The original intent of these targets was to resemble, among other things, enemy personnel (1/3, 1/4, 1/6 and 1/10 figure, minismen, etc.), barrels (tnne), bunker openings (strip 30/10 and 13/40), and vehicle wheels (S25 target). These targets’ origins are typically not disclosed.
