Jisoo, Jennie, Rosé, and Lisa are members of the South Korean girl group Blackpink, which YG Entertainment founded. The group made their debut in August 2016 with the single album Square One, which included the singles “Whistle” and “Boombayah,” which went to number one on the Gaon Digital List in South Korea and the Billboard World Digital Song Sales chart in the United States, respectively.

Blackpink is the highest-charting female Korean act on the Billboard Hot 100, with “Ice Cream” (2020) reaching at number 13, and on the Billboard 200, with The Album (2020) peaking at number two, the first-ever album by a Korean girl group to sell more than one million copies.

They were the first Korean female group to join and top Billboard’s Emerging Artists chart and the three times they topped the Billboard World Digital Song Sales chart.

With their hit single “Ddu-Du Ddu-Du” (2018), Blackpink became the first female Korean act to earn a certification from the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA), and their music video is now the most-viewed by a Korean group on YouTube. They have the most top 40 hits in the United Kingdom among all Korean artists, and their 2018 single “Kiss and Make Up,” a duet with Dua Lipa, was the first by a Korean group to achieve a BPI certification and an Australian Recording Industry Association platinum certification (ARIA).

Throughout its history, Blackpink has set several internet records. Their music videos for “Kill This Love” (2019) and “How You Like That” (2020), respectively, broke three and established two Guinness World Records for the most-viewed music video within the first 24 hours of release.

They are also the first Korean performer and music group to have four music videos with one billion views apiece on YouTube. On Spotify, Blackpink is the most-followed girl group, while on YouTube, it is the most-subscribed music group, female act, and Asian act.

Other honors include the New Artist of the Year Award at the 31st Golden Disc Awards and the 26th Seoul Music Awards, the Mnet Asian Music Award for Best Female Group in 2020, an MTV Music Video Award (the first win by a K-pop girl group), and being named the first female Korean group on Forbes’ 30 Under 30 Asia list.

Forbes Korea has named them one of the most influential celebrities in South Korea, with first place in 2019, third place in 2020, and second place in 2021.

After creating its first major female group, 2NE1, in 2009, YG Entertainment launched auditions worldwide seeking preteen and adolescent recruits to develop a new girl group. According to the members, joining the label as trainees was like enrolling in a full-time pop-star academy. Jennie compared it to “more rigorous than school” and Rosé compared it to “The X Factor with dorm dorms.”

The intensity of training, along with the culture shock, was especially tough for members who had left their homes outside of South Korea.

Blackpink’s preparations began in 2011, when YG Entertainment announced on November 14 that their new girl group, Blackpink, will debut in the early part of 2012 with at least seven members. Since then, several speculations and reports have appeared, claiming that the new female group’s debut has been postponed despite the lack of official information.

YG Entertainment didn’t disclose the female group’s July debut until May 18, 2016, claiming that the members were chosen after years of intense competition. The label later announced that Jang Hanna and Moon Sua, who had been tipped as possible members of the new female group, would not be joining them.
