Boba Fett is a fictional character developed by George Lucas for the Star Wars franchise. He is an armored bounty hunter that appears in both the original and prequel film trilogies, but was initially voiced by Don Francks in the Star Wars Holiday Special (1978). The character was mostly played by Jeremy Bulloch and voiced by Jason Wingreen in the original trilogy as a supporting antagonist. Fett appears in both The Empire Strikes Back (1980) and Return of the Jedi (1983), serving the criminal lord Jabba the Hutt, and is known for his quiet manner and refusal to remove his helmet.

While he appeared to be slain in Return of the Jedi after falling into a sarlacc, he has subsequently resurfaced in Star Wars material set after the film, indicating that he is still alive. Fett made a non-speaking cameo appearance in the Special Edition of A New Hope, which was released in 1997. In the prequel film Attack of the Clones (2002), Daniel Logan plays a preteen Boba Fett, revealing the character’s origins as a clone and the adopted son of bounty hunter Jango Fett.

Outside of the films, the character appears in a variety of Star Wars media, including books, comics, television shows, and video games, many of which portray him as an antihero rather than a villain and examine his motives, background, and morals. Temuera Morrison, who portrayed Jango in Attack of the Clones, has voiced the character as an adult in most Star Wars projects since the film’s release. Daniel Logan reprised his role as the younger version of Fett in the animated series Star Wars: The Clone Wars, while Temuera Morrison, who portrayed Jango in Attack of the Clones, has voiced the character as an adult in most Star Wars projects since the film’s release. Morrison went on to play Fett in The Mandalorian, a live-action Disney+ series, and will reprise the role in The Book of Boba Fett, a spin-off.

Fett was originally conceived as a member of a group of white-armored Imperial “supercommandos” during the development of The Empire Strikes Back, but the idea was scrapped in favor of a lone bounty hunter; this concept later evolved into the Mandalorians, a cultural group with strong warrior traditions who wear armor and helmets similar to Fett’s.

Despite his brief appearance in the original Star Wars trilogy, Boba Fett immediately became a fan favorite and is now a well-known figure in popular culture. His cult following has grown as a result of his fame among Star Wars fans.

On September 24, 1978, the character of Boba Fett made his first public appearance during the San Anselmo Country Fair procession. Duwayne Dunham, who was working as an associate film editor at the time and subsequently became a film and television director, wore the Boba Fett costume in the procession. Two months later, the character had his broadcast premiere in an animated piece for the Star Wars Holiday Special, created by Toronto-based animation studio Nelvana Productions.

Fett first appears as a mystery man who saves Luke SkywalkerChewbaccaC-3PO, and R2-D2 from a gigantic monster, only to expose himself to be a Darth Vader bounty hunter. Costumed Fett figures emerged in shopping malls and other events after his appearance and identity were revealed in the Holiday Special, putting up wanted posters of the character to distinguish him from the franchise’s Imperial characters.
