Bokeh is the aesthetic quality of the blur created in out-of-focus regions of a picture in photography. “The way the lens renders out-of-focus spots of light” is another definition of bokeh. Bokeh effects vary greatly depending on lens aberrations and aperture shape. Some lens designs blur the picture in an attractive fashion, while others blur the image in a distracting or disagreeable way (“good” and “bad” bokeh, respectively). Photographers may utilize a shallow focus approach on purpose to make photographs with notable out-of-focus patches, enhancing the bokeh of their lens.

Bokeh is commonly connected with tiny background highlights, such as specular reflections and light sources, since it is most evident there. Bokeh, on the other hand, is not restricted to highlights; blur may appear in any area of a picture that is outside of the depth of field.

When Mike Johnston, the editor at the time, commissioned three papers on the subject for the May/June 1997 issue of Photo Techniques magazine, he changed the spelling to suggest the correct pronunciation to English speakers, saying “it is properly pronounced with bo as in bone and ke as in Kenneth, with equal stress on either syllable.”

The depth of field is the area where the circle of confusion is less than the human eye’s resolution.

Though it’s impossible to define, some lenses feature more attractive out-of-focus regions than others. Because macro lenses and long telephoto lenses are frequently employed in circumstances with short depth of focus, “good” bokeh is extremely crucial. Medium telephoto lenses (usually 85″150 mm on 35 mm format) require good bokeh as well. The photographer normally prefers a small depth of focus in portrait photography (for their “natural” viewpoint), so that the person stands out vividly against a blurred backdrop.
