Borderlands is a multiplatform action role-playing first-person shooter video game franchise created by Gearbox Software and distributed by 2K Games. It is set in a space western science fantasy setting.

Borderlands (2009), Borderlands 2 (2012), Borderlands: The Prequel (2014), and Borderlands 3 (2015) are the four games in the series, each featuring several downloadable content packs (2019). Telltale Games’ Tales from the Borderlands (2014–2015) is a spin-off episodic graphic adventure game.

For its loot-driven multiplayer co-op gameplay and sense of comedy, the series has earned critical praise and financial success. More than 45 million copies of Borderlands games had been delivered as of August 2019, with 22 million of those being Borderlands 2. Borderlands 3 sold an extra 5 million copies in the first five days after its release, increasing the series’ total net sales to over $1 billion. This makes it one among the most successful video game series ever. Lionsgate is working on a cinematic version of the series.

The Borderlands games are first-person loot shooters with some role-playing game (RPG) features set in an open environment (Tales from the Borderlands, however, is an episodic adventure game). Randy Pitchford came up with the idea to mix the principles of first-person shooters like Doom with role-playing games like Diablo, which had randomized loot. Gearbox developed the notion of players pursuing Vaults on the planet Pandora after creating the features of this shooter-RPG mix, equating the finding of new riches to opening a Pandora’s box.

Players choose from a variety of characters who portray Vault Hunters who have gone to the planet Pandora in search of the mythical Vault. Each Vault Hunter has a unique skill tree as well as one or more special powers. Players must then complete objectives and explore Pandora while avoiding the deadly Pandora animals, mad scavengers trapped on the planet, and different military factions attempting to stop them. Completing tasks and killing enemies awards the player in-game money and experience, which can be used to improve their skill tree.

If the player runs out of health or falls into bottomless pits, they resurrect at the last checkpoint and lose some of their money. The games are separated into numerous maps, and if players reach a waypoint station on one, they may teleport to any other map they have previously visited. To advance into a different area, players must first reach specific locations on the map’s perimeter. On some areas, the player can spawn an armed vehicle to aid in traversing huge landscapes or dealing with more strong opponents.
