They are large cats of difficult appearance. Because of their masculine appearance, the “British” is often preferred by the man. Brought to the United States from Great Britain in the early 1900s, they were not recognized as a breed there until 1970, then only in blue and black. The original members of this group were developed during the 19th century from ordinary short-haired domestic cats. At one point, long-haired varieties were also included in breeding programs to improve the type. This has resulted in today’s breed, which is a large, a rather stocky chest animal with a relatively large head, short, strong legs, and large round legs. It was one of the first breeds to be presented at the Crystal Palace in London, where the first cat show on the bench took place in 1871.
European short hair is about the same and has similar breed standards. In contrast, the American Shorthair, which has evolved in an environment with more natural predators, is larger and less stocky, with relatively long legs and tai and a more oblong head.
British Shorthair Physical Appearance
A compact, well-balanced, powerful, and muscular cat with a relatively compact body and short legs. The head is round and rests on a short thick neck. There should be a good width between the ears, which should be small and rounded at the ends. The round face should have round cheeks and a deep, firm chin. The forehead should be rounded and lead to a short, wide, straight nose. The eyes should be large, round, wide open, and wide apart. The body is a cobby, comparatively massive and low-slung with a wide and deep chest and a flat back. The legs are short and strong, with rounded paws. The tail is thick and of medium length, thicker at the base and rounded at the tip. The coat is short, dense, and crisp. Ideally, the density should be such that the coat seems to “break” when the cat is moving.
British Shorthair Behaviors
Although tough in appearance, these “gentle giants” are affectionate and easygoing. They adapt well to other animals and children. Their size and weight make them poor climbers, and some are even afraid of heights. They are intelligent and of equal humor, not finicky. They are moderately active and playful.
