The broomstick is a broom that is connected to and runs nearly parallel to a cylindrical handle. As a result, it’s a brush with a lengthy handle. It’s frequently used in tandem with a dustpan.

There’s a difference between a “hard broom” and a “soft broom,” as well as a spectrum in between. Soft brooms, like a “feather duster,” are used in certain cultures to sweep cobwebs and spiders from walls, whereas hard brooms are used for tougher chores like sweeping dirt off sidewalks or concrete floors, or even smoothing and texturing wet concrete. The majority of brooms are in the middle, perfect for sweeping the floors of homes and businesses, soft enough to move even light dust yet stiff enough to generate a forceful sweeping movement.

The broom has long been connected with witchcraft and ceremonial magic.

The term “broom” comes from the name of a prickly shrub used for sweeping (Genista and others). During the Early Modern English era, the bushes’ name came to be adopted for the household tool in Late Middle English, eventually replacing the previous besom. The “broom besom” is still mentioned in the ballad Buy Broom Buzzems (by William Purvis 1752″1832) as one sort of besom (i.e. “a besom made from broom”).

Shakers produced flat brooms made of broom corn with the creation of the broom vice in the 19th century. A duster is a smaller version of a whisk broom or brush.

When Levi Dickenson, a farmer in Hadley, Massachusetts, made a broom for his wife out of the tassels of sorghum, a grain he was growing for the seeds, the quality of brooms changed. Dickenson’s sorghum brooms were in high demand once his wife spread the news. The sorghum brooms stood up well, but, like all brooms, they eventually fell apart. Dickenson went on to build a machine that could produce better brooms than he could. The foot treadle broom machine was designed in 1810. The Industrial Revolution would not have been possible without this machine.

According to one source, the United States had 303 broom manufactures in 1839, with a peak of 1,039 in 1919. The majority of them were in the Eastern United States; the number of factories fell to 320 in 1939 during the Great Depression of the 1930s. Because broom corn grew particularly well in Oklahoma, the state became a significant center for broom manufacture, with The Oklahoma Broom Corn Company constructing a facility in El Reno in 1906. By the 1960s, most of the factories had closed due to competition from imported brooms and synthetic bristles.

Flying brooms have a crucial part in Harry Potter’s fantasy world, since they are utilized for both transportation and the popular airborne game of Quidditch. In Poul Anderson’s Operation Chaos universe, flying brooms and flying carpets are the primary modes of transportation.
