Cameron Jerrell Newton is a free agent quarterback in the National Football League. He spent the first nine seasons of his NFL career with the Carolina Panthers, who drafted him first overall in the 2011 NFL Draft.

Before entering Auburn, Newton played collegiate football at Florida and Blinn, where he won the Bowl Championship Series National Championship and the Heisman Trophy in 2010. With 70 running touchdowns, he is the NFL’s all-time leader in quarterback rushing touchdowns.

Newton had an immediate impact in his debut season, setting rookie records for passing (4,051) and running yards (706) by a quarterback while also earning NFL Offensive Rookie of the Year. He was the first rookie quarterback in the NFL to pass for 4,000 yards and 400 yards in his first season, and he also established the season record for quarterback rushing touchdowns with 14.

Newton led the Panthers to three division victories and four playoff berths between 2013 and 2017. His greatest season was in 2015, when he was selected Most Valuable Player (MVP) after leading Carolina to a franchise-best 15″1 record and a Super Bowl participation in Super Bowl 50. He is the first African-American quarterback to win NFL MVP. He is one of four African-American quarterbacks to win the award.

Newton battled with injuries following his MVP season, and the Panthers only made the playoffs once in the following four seasons. He was released by Carolina after missing the most of the 2019 season due to surgery and spent the 2020 season with the New England Patriots. Following the 2021 preseason, he was released by the Patriots.

Newton started his football career at the University of Florida, where he was a member of the Gators in 2007 and 2008. Newton knocked out fellow freshman quarterback John Brantley as the backup quarterback for future Heisman Trophy winner Tim Tebow as a freshman in 2007.

He appeared in five games, throwing for 40 yards on 5-of-10 passing and running for 103 yards and three touchdowns on 16 carries. Newton made his sophomore season debut against Hawaii in 2008, but sustained an ankle injury and had to sit out the rest of the season.

Newton was arrested on felony counts of burglary, theft, and obstruction of justice on November 21, 2008, when it was discovered that he had stolen a laptop computer from another University of Florida student. After that, he was kicked from the squad. The cops on campus “The athlete’s stolen laptop was tracked down… In a hilariously ill-advised attempt to hide the computer from authorities, Newton flung it out his dorm window.”

After Newton completed a court-approved pre-trial diversion program, all accusations against him were withdrawn. In 2010, Newton stated, “I believe that a person should not be regarded of as a horrible person because of some dumb error that they did.” “Every person, in my opinion, should be given a second opportunity.

So be it if they squander that second chance.” Three days before the Gators’ national title triumph over Oklahoma, Newton revealed his plan to transfer from Florida. Prior to transferring, Newton faced probable expulsion from the University of Florida for three incidents of academic dishonesty, according to Fox Sports’ Thayer Evans.
