Since they are often served during cocktail hours, it is often desired that the canapé be salty or spicy to encourage guests to drink more. canapé can also be classified as finger food, although not all finger foods are canapés. Crackers or small slices of bread, toast, or sandwich dough, cut into various shapes, serve as the base for savory butters or pastes, often with savoury foods such as meat, cheese, fish, caviar, foie gras, purées or relish.

Traditionally, canapés are built on stale bread (although other products, such as pastry, crackers or fresh vegetables, can be used as a base), cut into thin slices, and then shaped with a cutter or knife into circles, rings, squares, strips or triangles. Then they are deep-fried, fried or sautéed, then coated on top of accumulated using processed and decorative elements. Colorful and eye-pleasing garnishes often complement the presentation. Canapés are usually served on the canapé salver and eaten from small canapé plates.
