Carol Danvers / Captain Marvel is the protagonist of Captain Marvel, a 2019 American superhero film based on Marvel Comics. It is the 21st film in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, produced by Marvel Studios and released by Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures (MCU). Anna Boden and Ryan Fleck wrote and directed the film, with Geneva Robertson-Dworet contributing to the screenplay. Carol Danvers stars Brie Larson, Ben Mendelsohn, Djimon Hounsou, Lee Pace, Lashana Lynch, Gemma Chan, Annette Bening, Clark Gregg, and Jude Law, with Samuel L. Jackson, Ben Mendelsohn, Djimon Hounsou, Lee Pace, Lashana Lynch, Gemma Chan, Annette Bening, Clark Gregg, and Jude Law. The story follows Danvers as she becomes Captain Marvel when Earth becomes embroiled in a cosmic battle between two extraterrestrial civilizations in 1995.

The film’s production began in May of 2013. It was revealed in October 2014 that it will be Marvel Studios’ first female-led superhero picture. After presenting distinct perspectives on the character, Nicole Perlman and Meg LeFauve were recruited to script the film the following April, and used aspects from Roy Thomas’ 1971 “Kree”Skrull War” comic book narrative.

Larson was cast as Danvers at San Diego Comic-Con in 2016, and Boden and Fleck were recruited to direct in April 2017. Robertson-Dworet was quickly engaged to rewrite the script, and by the time production began, the remainder of the actors had been added. Principle photography began in California in March 2018 and ended in Louisiana in July 2018.

Location filming began in January 2018, with principal photography beginning in California in March and ending in Louisiana in July 2018. Several performers, notably Jackson and Gregg, who were digitally de-aged in post-production to suit the film’s 1990s period, reprise their roles from prior MCU films in Captain Marvel.

Captain Marvel debuted in London on February 27, 2019, and was released in theaters in the United States on March 8, part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s Phase Three. The film made more than $1.1 billion globally, making it the first female-led superhero picture. During its theatrical run, it became the fifth-highest-grossing film of 2019 and the 23rd-highest-grossing film of all time. The actors, notably Larson’s, got high appreciation for their work in the film. The Marvels, a sequel, will be released on November 11, 2022.
