Chinese New Year is the most significant of all Chinese holidays. Chinese from all over the world unite in their traditions, holding a 15-day New Year celebration. There are many holidays, decorations and interesting symbols that are associated with the history of the holiday and its desire for good luck. Chinese New Year can change date every other year. This is because the Chinese base their holidays using the lunar calendar, which is a 10-month lunar calendar. This usually happens between January 21 and February 20. This marks the beginning of the first month in the Chinese lunar calendar.

For each year, the calendar of the Chinese is identified by one of 12 animals in the theory of astrology. It can be one of 12 such as: rat, ox, tiger, rabbit, dragon, snake, horse, sheep, monkey, rooster, dog, and pig. Each of these zodiac animals has its own unique meaning in Chinese astrology.

Time Frame

Chinese New Year lasts 15 days. It begins with the Lunar New Year and ends with the Lantern Festival, which takes place on the 15th evening. Each of these 15 days has a special meaning for the Chinese. This is a special day for visiting and honoring the elderly, greeting Chinese gods, a day of prayer, a day to stay home and not visiting, a day to go to the market, to have reunions, visiting and dining with your family. All these tasks should be done in the specific day. It is also a part of their tradition.

During the Chinese New Year, people give red packets of money to their younger friends and relatives. They say that it will bring luck to the givers if they follow this tradition. Many fireworks and firecrackers will be heard during the Chinese New Year. They say they will drive away the evil spirits from the previous year. Thus, they can start with a fresh and New Year peacefully. During the 15th day there are also dancing dragon and lion, banners, floral decorations, red lanterns and much more. The whole Chinese community will party and celebrate together very colorfully.
