A clown is a person who wears a colorful costume and wears a distinctive make-up face while doing humor in an open-minded manner employing physical comedy.
The first clowns were found in Egypt during the Fifth Dynasty, circa 2400 BC. Clowns, unlike court jesters, have traditionally fulfilled a socio-religious and psychological function, and priests and clowns have often been the same individual. “It seems conceivable that stupidity and fools, like religion and magic, satisfy certain deeply founded demands in human civilization,” argues Peter Berger. As a result, clowning is sometimes seen as a crucial aspect of physical performance training, partially because difficult subject matter may be addressed, but also because it necessitates a high level of risk and play on the part of the performer.
In anthropology, the word clown has been applied to non-Western civilizations’ equivalent jester or fool figures. Clown civilizations are communities in which such clowns play a prominent role, and a ritual clown is a clown persona that performs religious or ritual functions.
The Trickster is a sacred Clown figure in Native American mythology who harnesses the spirit of the Coyote. A Heyoka is a Native American who lives beyond the bounds of traditional cultural traditions, acting as a backwards clown and doing everything backwards. A Winkte is sometimes the finest choice for the Heyoka position.
Clowning is a tradition among several Native American tribes. The European and Native American clowning approaches are combined in the Canadian clowning style invented by Richard Pochinko and furthered by his former pupil, Sue Morrison. Masks are produced of clay when the creator’s eyes are closed in this practice. Each direction of the medicine wheel has its own mask. The clown produces a personal mythology that addresses their own experiences during this process.
Modern clowns are closely tied with the circus clown heritage, which evolved from previous humorous roles in theatre or Varieté acts in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. Outlandish costumes, unusual makeup, vivid wigs, exaggerated footwear, and vibrant clothing are all hallmarks of this identifiable persona, whose aesthetic is often geared to entertain huge crowds.
Joseph Grimaldi played the first major clown role (who also created the traditional whiteface make-up design). He enlarged the role of Clown in the harlequinade that was a component of British pantomimes in the early 1800s, particularly at the Theatre Royal, Drury Lane, and the Sadler’s Wells and Covent Garden theatres. He dominated the London comedy scene to the point where harlequinade Clowns were nicknamed “Joey,” and the term, as well as Grimaldi’s whiteface make-up design, are still utilized by other clowns.
Clowns frequently perform comedy in the character of a fool whose routine acts and tasks become extraordinary”and for whom the ridiculous becomes commonplace for a brief moment. This type of humor has a lengthy history in a variety of nations and cultures. Due to the widespread usage of such comedy and its lengthy history, some writers have claimed that it is a desire that is inherent in the human condition.
