Coraline is a 2009 American stop-motion animated dark fantasy horror film directed by Henry Selick and based on Neil Gaiman’s novella of the same name from 2002. Dakota Fanning, Teri Hatcher, Jennifer Saunders, Dawn French, Keith David, John Hodgman, Robert Bailey Jr., and Ian McShane all lend their voices to the film, which is Laika’s debut feature photo.

The film follows the main character as they discovers an idealized parallel world hidden behind a secret door in her new house, unknowing that the alternate reality hides a dark and sinister truth.

After a global debut at the Portland International Film Festival, the film was released theatrically in the United States on February 6, 2009 by Focus Features to generally good reviews.

After Chicken Run and Wallace and Gromit: The Curse of the Were-Rabbit, the picture earned $16.85 million in its opening weekend, placing it third at the box office. By the conclusion of its run, it had grossed over $124 million worldwide, making it the third highest-grossing stop-motion film of all time.

The film was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Animated Feature and a Golden Globe Award for Best Animated Feature Film, as well as Annie Awards for Best Music in an Animated Feature Production, Best Character Design in an Animated Feature Production, and Best Production Design in an Animated Feature Production.

Universal Studios Home Entertainment released the film on DVD and Blu-ray in the United States on July 21, 2009. The green-magenta anaglyph picture is included in the 3-D edition, which comes with four pairs of 3-D glasses. On October 12, 2009, Coraline was released on DVD and Blu-ray in the United Kingdom. A 2-Disc Collector’s Edition including a 3-D version of the film was also available.

The DVD sold 1,036,845 copies in its first week, grossing over $19 million. Approximately 2.6 million devices have been sold, generating over $45 million in income. In 2011, a two-disc Blu-ray 3D set with stereoscopic 3D on the first disc and an anaglyph 3D picture on the second disc was released. On August 31, 2021, Shout! Factory issued a new edition under license from Universal.
