However, legal definitions are given for specific purposes. The most common view is that crime is a category created by law; In other words, something is a crime if it is declared so by applicable law. One of the proposed definitions is that a crime or offence (or criminal offence) is an act that harms not only specific individuals but also a community, society or state (“a public wrong”). Such actions are prohibited and punishable by law.

The notion that acts such as murder, rape, and theft are to be prohibited exists worldwide. What exactly constitutes a crime is determined by the criminal law of each state. While many have a catalogue of crimes called the criminal code, some common law countries do not have such a comprehensive law.
