Darth Vader is a fictional character that appears in the Star Wars film series. In the original trilogy, he is the main antagonist, and in the prequel trilogy, he is the main protagonist as Anakin Skywalker. The first six Star Wars episodic films have been collectively referred to as “the tragedy of Darth Vader” by Star Wars creator George Lucas.

Anakin, a former slave on Tatooine, is a Jedi who has been foretold to restore balance to the Force. Palpatine persuades him to the dark side of the Force, and he becomes a Sith Lord, adopting the name Darth Vader. Vader is converted into a cyborg after a lightsaber battle with his former mentor Obi-Wan Kenobi, in which he is badly damaged. After that, he becomes the Galactic Empire’s main enforcer. Vader redeems himself in the end by protecting his son, Luke Skywalker, and destroying Palpatine while sacrificing his own life. He is also Padmé Amidala’s hidden spouse, Princess Leia’s biological father, and Kylo Ren’s maternal grandfather.

In the original trilogy, David Prowse physically represented Vader while James Earl Jones voiced him, while Sebastian Shaw portrayed the unmasked Anakin Skywalker in Return of the Jedi, as well as the character’s spirit in the original version of that film. In the prequel trilogy, Jake Lloyd and Hayden Christensen portrayed Anakin in the first and second films, respectively, and the latter also replaced Shaw as Anakin’s ghost in the 2004 re-release of Return of the Jedi.

His filmography includes the first six Star Wars movies, as well as Rogue One. He makes voice cameos as both Vader and Anakin in The Rise of Skywalker, and is mentioned in both The Force Awakens and The Last Jedi. He also appears in various Star Wars Expanded Universe versions, including as video games, novels, and comic books, as well as television shows (most notably The Clone Wars).

Darth Vader has become one of pop culture’s most recognizable villains, and has been ranked among the greatest villains and fictional characters of all time. On 100 Years… 100 Heroes and Villains, the American Film Institute named him the third greatest cinematic villain in film history, after Hannibal Lecter and Norman Bates. His portrayal of a tragic hero in the story was likewise well received.

The phrase “Dark Water” was used to create a number of other names for the figure. Then Lucas “combined a bunch of last names, Vaders and Wilsons and Smiths, and simply came up with the Darth and Vader combo.” Following the release of The Empire Strikes Back (1980), Lucas explained that the name Vader was inspired by the German/Dutch homophone vater or vader, which means ‘father,’ and therefore represents a “Dark Father.” Other terms that might have inspired the name include “death” and “invader,” as well as the name of a Lucas high school senior, Gary Vader.

Because no other character with the name “Darth” was introduced until The Phantom Menace (1999), several viewers mistook it for his first name, partly because Obi-Wan Kenobi calls him as “Darth” in the first film. Anakin receives the title after his conversion to the dark side of the Force in Revenge of the Sith (2005).
