Gru, a repentant supervillain (who eventually becomes a parent, husband, and secret agent), and his yellow-colored Minions lead in the American computer-animated media series Despicable Me. Illumination is in charge of production, while Universal Pictures is in charge of distribution.

Despicable Me (2010) launched the franchise, which was followed by two sequels, Despicable Me 2 (2013) and Despicable Me 3 (2017), as well as two spin-off prequels, Minions (2015) and Minions: The Rise of Gru (2022). Many short films, a television special, many computer games, and a theme park experience are all part of the franchise. With nearly $3.7 billion in global box office revenues, the franchise is the highest-grossing animated film franchise and the 15th highest-grossing film franchise of all time.

Lucy Wilde recruits Gru to the Anti-Villain League (AVL) in order to stop El Macho, a supervillain who is said to have died by riding a shark into an active volcano with 250 pounds of dynamite strapped to his chest and whose body was never found, and his evil Minions, who he turned into rabid and indestructible monsters using the stolen PX-41 serum.

In order to combat a new opponent named Balthazar Bratt, a former child actor enamored with the 1980s who grows up to become a villain after having his show terminated during adolescence, Gru partners up with his long-lost twin brother Dru.

Kevin, Stuart, and Bob lead the search for a new master until they come upon Scarlet Overkill, a female supervillain, and her husband, Herb, who try to kill them.

Felonious Gru, a 12-year-old supervillain, strives to become evil enough to join the Vicious six supervillain gang. He must stop the Vicious six after he stole a valuable artifact with the assistance of his Minions.

The series has produced a total of 14 short films. Three short films based on Despicable Me (2010) were released on DVD and Blu-ray in December 2010. Three more short films were featured on the Despicable Me 2 DVD and Blu-ray, which were released in December 2013. In 2015, three short films were released on the Minions Blu-ray and DVD, while one short film was released on the Despicable Me 3 Blu-ray and DVD (2017).

Mower Minions, a short film, was released in 2016 alongside The Secret Life of Pets, making it the first short Minions film to be distributed theatrically. With The Grinch (2018), a second theatrical short film was produced, and another was included in The Grinch’s DVD and Blu-ray.
