It was released worldwide on September 9, 2014 for the PlayStation 3, PlayStation 4, Xbox 360, and Xbox One consoles.

Destiny marked Bungie’s first new console franchise since the Halo series, and it was the first game in a ten-year deal between Bungie and Activision. Being in the world of “mythical science fiction”, the game is a multi-user environment of the “shared-world” with elements of role-playing game.

Activities in Destiny are split between Player vs. Environment (PvE) and Player vs. Player (PvP) game types. In addition to the usual historical missions, PvE “strikes” three players and six players raids. There is also a free roaming mode for each planet and includes public events. PvP has object-based modes, as well as traditional deathmatch game modes.

Since its release, Destiny has received generally positive reviews with criticism focused mainly on the game’s plot and post campaign content. The game was praised for retaining its origins in the Halo franchise, especially in terms of competitive experience. On the first day of its launch, it sold over $325 million in retail over the first five days, making it the largest new franchise startup of all time.

It was GamesRadar’s 2014 Game of the Year, and it won the BAFTA Award for Best Video Game of 2014 at the British Video Games Academy.
