This frequently entails matching the beats of the music sources so that their rhythms and tempos do not conflict when played simultaneously, and a smooth transition from one song to the next is possible.

DJs frequently utilize specialist DJ mixers and tiny audio mixers featuring crossfader and cue features to blend or transition from one music to another. Mixers are also used to modify forthcoming songs to mix with presently playing music and pre-listen to recorded audio sources in headphones.

Instead of using a console mixer, DJ software and a DJ controller device may mix audio files on a computer. DJs may also utilize a microphone to address the audience and sound effects devices like reverb and electronic musical instruments like drum machines and synthesizers.
