Akira Toriyama established the Japanese media series Dragon Ball in 1984. The first manga, written and drawn by Toriyama, was published in Weekly Shnen Jump from 1984 to 1995, with Shueisha collecting the 519 individual chapters into 42 tankbon volumes. Dragon Ball was based on the famous 16th-century Chinese tale Journey to the West, with elements of Hong Kong martial arts flicks thrown in for good measure. The series recounts the experiences of protagonist Son Goku as he trains in martial arts from childhood to maturity. He spends his boyhood far from society until he encounters Bulma, an adolescent girl who invites him to join her on her journey to find the seven orbs known as the Dragon Balls, which when gathered unleash a wish-granting dragon. Along the way, Goku meets new friends, starts a family, learns about his alien ancestry, and fights a variety of adversaries, many of whom are also after the Dragon Balls.

Toei Animation translated Toriyama’s manga and divided it into two anime series: Dragon Ball and Dragon Ball Z, which were televised in Japan from 1986 to 1996. The studio has also produced 20 animated feature films, three television specials, and two anime sequel series, Dragon Ball GT (1996″1997) and Dragon Ball Super (2015″2018). From 2009 to 2015, a recut of Dragon Ball Z aired in Japan under the title Dragon Ball Kai, which was a recut that more accurately followed the manga’s plot by deleting much of the content included uniquely in the anime. Multiple firms have created various sorts of merchandising based on the series, which has resulted in a massive media franchise that includes animated and live-action films, collectable trading card games, countless action figures, as well as several music collections and video games. Dragon Ball has grown to become one of the most successful media series in history.

It has had a significant influence on worldwide popular culture, inspiring and being cited by a wide range of artists, sports, celebrities, filmmakers, singers, and writers.

The main setting for the entire Dragon Ball series, as well as related media such as Dr. Slump, Nekomajin, and Jaco the Galactic Patrolman, is Earth, also known as the Dragon World and designated as “Planet 4032-877” by the celestial hierarchy. It is mostly populated by Earthlings, a phrase that refers to all of the planet’s sentient races, including humans, anthropomorphic creatures, and monsters. Various alien species such as the Saiyans and Namekians have played a larger part in franchise media since the Dragon Ball Z series.

The majority of Dragon Ball chronicles Goku’s travels; after meeting Bulma at the start of the series, the two embark on an expedition to collect the seven Dragon Balls. Later, Goku undergoes martial arts instruction from Master Roshi, meets his longtime buddy Krillin, and competes in the World Martial Arts Tournament against the world’s most powerful fighters. When the villainous King Piccolo, and later his son Piccolo, attempt to take the earth, Goku obtains instruction from Earth’s deities in order to battle them. Subsequently, Goku sacrifices his life to defend the world from his estranged brother Raditz, but later trains in the afterlife under King Kai’s supervision to protect it from the two approaching Saiyans Nappa and Vegeta. Later, he transforms into a Super Saiyan and fights the evil tyrant Frieza. This establishes the tone for the remainder of the series, with each new foe the protagonists meet being more powerful than the last, necessitating further training.

Dragon Ball Super establishes that the franchise is set in a multiverse made up of twelve numbered universes, each ruled by a number of benevolent and malevolent deities known as Supreme Kais and Gods of Destruction, who are appointed by a higher being known as the Grand Zeno, who oversees the multiverse alongside the Grand Priest, the father of all Angels. Except for sections of Dragon Ball Super, almost the entire Dragon Ball series takes set in Universe 7. The years in the chronology are referred to as “Ages,” and the majority of the action takes place between the ages of 749 and 790. There are various worlds in Universe 7, including a fictionalized Earth, which is home to humanity, and Planet Vegeta, which is home to the Saiyans, a strong and deadly species. Angels, Demons, Androids, Tuffles, and Namekians are among the species that inhabit Universe 7. Humans are one of the most vulnerable races in the cosmos. Goku, the protagonist, is raised as a human on Earth before discovering that he is a Saiyan from Planet Vegeta.
