Dua Lipa (born 22 August 1995) is an English singer and songwriter. After working as a model, she signed with Warner Music Group in 2015 and released her self-titled debut album in 2017. The album peaked at number three on the UK album charts and produced nine singles, including “Be the One” and “IDGAF” and the UK number one “New Rules,” which also peaked at the top of six in the US. In 2018, Lipa won the Brit Awards for British Female Solo Artist and British Breakthrough Act.

Released in April 2018, the single “One Kiss” featuring Calvin Harris achieved her biggest success in the UK and became the singer’s longest-running number-one single in 2018. In 2019, she received a Brit Award for the song of the year. In 2019, she also won a Grammy Award for Best New Artist, and “Electricity,” in collaboration with Silk City, won a Grammy Award for Best Dance Recording. The success of the single helped her self-titled album become one of Spotify’s most popular albums and achieved platinum certifications. Her second studio album Future Nostalgia was released in March 2020 to critical acclaim. This is her first number one album in the UK; her lead single “Don’t Start Now” peaked at number one in the UK singles and on the Billboard Hot 100 charts.

Lipa has received various awards, including two Grammy Awards, three Brit Awards and two MTV Europe Music Awards. She has also been nominated for three Billboard Music Awards, an American Music Award and ten MTV Video Music Awards. Lipa was born on 22 August 1995 in Westminster, London, to Kosovar Albanian parents who had moved from Pristina, FR Yugoslavia (present-day Kosovo) in 1992. Her father—Dukagjin Lipa—is a is the marketing manager and lead vocalist for the Kosovan rock band Oda, and her mother, Anesa Lipa (née Rexha), works in the tourism industry. Through her maternal grandmother, Lipa is also of Bosnian descent. Lipa has a younger sister, Rina, and a younger brother, Gjin. She attended Sylvia Youth Theater School part-time before moving to Kosovo with her family in 2006 when her father accepted an offer to work there. In Kosovo, Lipa attended the “Mileniumi i Tretë” (Third Millennium) School in Pristina and became a fan of hip-hop artists, which ultimately influenced her musical style.

At 14, Lipa began posting covers of her favorite songs by artists such as Pink and Nelly Furtado on YouTube. She said that she was influenced by Justin Bieber on YouTube, which inspired her to do the same. A year later, she returned to London with the desire to become a singer.
