Eyelashes or simply lash are one of the hairs that grow at the end of the eyelid. It grows in one layer along the edge of the eyelid. Eyelashes protect the eye from debris, dust and small particles and perform some of the same functions as a whisker for a cat or mouse, in the sense that it is sensitive to touch, thereby warning of an approaching object (such as a bug) is near to the eye (which then reflexively closes).

The Ancient Greek word for eyelashes is βλέφαρον (transliterated as blepharon), which is believed to be of biological origin as Blephara. The human embryo’s eyelashes develop from the ectoderm between 22 and 26 weeks of pregnancy. Natural lashes do not grow to a certain length or fall off on their own without trimming. Eyelashes will grow back in about seven to eight weeks if pulled, but pulling them out can cause permanent damage. Their color may differ from their hair color, although they tend to be dark in someone with dark hair and lighter in someone with light hair. The hair on the eyelashes is not androgenic and is therefore not affected by puberty.

In many cultures, long eyelashes are considered a sign of beauty. Accordingly, some women seek to artificially increase the length of their eyelashes through eyelash extensions. On the other hand, it is known that Hadza women cut their own eyelashes.
