The movement of individuals between distant geographical regions is referred to as travel. Travel can be one way or round trip and can be done by foot, bicycle, car, railway, boat, bus, airline, ship, or other methods, with or without luggage. As in the case of tourism, travel might sometimes entail very brief stops between subsequent moves.

Most likely, the origin of the term “travel” has been lost to history. The word “travel” has sprung from the Old French word travail, meaning “labor.” The term travel was first used in the 14th century, according to the Merriam-Webster dictionary. It also claims that the term originates from Middle English travailen, travelen (which means to torment, labor, struggle, or journey), and Old French travailler (which means to suffer, labor, struggle, or journey) (which means to work strenuously, toil). The phrase “travail,” meaning “to fight,” is still used in English on occasion. The terms “travel” and “travail,” according to Simon Winchester’s book The Best Travelers’ Tales (2004), have an even older root: the tripalium, a Roman torture tool (in Latin it means “three stakes,” as in to impale). This connection might be a reflection of ancient travel’s tremendous difficulties. Depending on the destination, contemporary travel may or may not be substantially easier. More demanding travel arrangements include trips to Mount Everest, the Amazon jungle, extreme tourism, and adventure travel. Traveling by bus, cruise ship, or even bullock cart might be more challenging depending on the mode of transportation.

Travel extends back to antiquity when affluent Greeks and Romans would visit their summer palaces and villas in locations like Pompeii and Baiae for pleasure. While early travel was often slower, riskier, and dominated by commerce and migration, cultural and technical advancements have tended to make travel simpler and more accessible over time. Since Christopher Columbus traveled to the new world from Spain in 1492, an expedition that took over ten weeks to reach its ultimate destination, humanity has gone a long way in transportation, with planes allowing overnight travel from Spain to the United States in the twenty-first century.

Travel in the Middle Ages was challenging and complex, yet it was necessary for the economy and society. End-user retailing frequently required the services of many itinerant peddlers wandering from village to hamlet, gyrovagues (Wandering Monks) and wandering friars brought theology and pastoral support to neglected areas, traveling minstrels performed the never-ending tour, and armies ranged far and wide.
