Centaur is a creature with the head, arms and body of man and the body and legs of a horse.

Female centaurs called centaurides or centauresses, not mentioned in the beginning of Greek literature and the arts, they sometimes appear later in antiquity. Macedonian mosaic of the 4th century BC, is one of the earliest examples of the centauress art. Ovid also mentions centauress named Hylonome, who committed suicide when her husband Cyllarus was killed in the war with the Lapiths.
