The 2022 FIFA World Cup will be the 22nd FIFA World Cup and will be played by the men’s national teams of FIFA’s member associations. It will be the second World Cup staged fully in Asia after the 2002 competition in South Korea and Japan, and it will be held in Qatar from November 20, 2022, to December 18, 2022. It will be the first World Cup to be held in the Arab and Muslim worlds.

The 2018 final saw France overcome Croatia 4-2 to retain their title. It is the most expensive World Cup ever, with an estimated cost of over $220 billion; Qatari officials dispute this figure, with the organizing CEO Nasser Al Khater claiming the real cost is $8 billion; other figures pertain to overall infrastructure development since the World Cup was awarded to Qatar in 2010.

The field will grow to 48 teams for the 2026 edition, making this event the last with 32 competing teams. This World Cup is being hosted in November and December to avoid the extremes of Qatar’s hot heat. There will be 64 matches contested over a compressed 29-day period in eight locations spread across five cities.

The Qatar national football team, competing in their first World Cup, was automatically qualified along with 31 other groups. Qatar was the only host nation to finish last in the competition, the first host to lose all three of their group matches, the earliest host nation to be eliminated, and the second host (following South Africa in 2010) to fail to advance past the first round.

The teams battled for points in eight round-robin groups of four teams during the first round of the tournament finals, with the top two teams from each group moving on. These 16 teams moved on to the knockout phase, which consisted of three rounds of competition to determine which teams would compete in the final, which would be hosted at Lusail Stadium on December 18, 2022, to coincide with Qatar’s National Day.
