Water is one of the most effective types of fire extinguishers. They should only be used on Class A fires, including paper, wood, fabrics, furniture, etc.

A water fire extinguisher is a solid red in color with a hose and nozzle attached, so that you can direct a stream of water at the bottom of the fire. As water conducts electricity, water extinguishers should not be used near live electrical cables. Water extinguishers are best kept next to a CO2 extinguisher so that the risk of an electric fire is covered in your building. Water extinguishers work by extinguishing flames and soaking (cooling) materials in the fire.

As with water, AFFF foam works on class A fires but can also extinguish class B fires / flammable liquids. When sprayed on a fire, AFFF foam extinguishes and smothers flames, then seals all dangerous vapours under the surface of the foam. The foam also penetrates porous materials and cools the fire when the water in the foam evaporates. As the foam fire extinguisher is non-conductive and tested according to the dielectric test BS EN3 35,000 V, they can be used nearby but not on live electrical equipment. The foam fire extinguishers are distinguished by their cream-colored panel.

Carbon dioxide or CO2 fire extinguishers are not dangerous for electric fires. Co2 gas is non-conductive and leaves no residue that will affect the future performance of electrical equipment, unlike foam or powder fire extinguishers. These types of extinguishers are also effective on class B fires (flammable liquids). Carbon dioxide extinguishers are distinguished by a black panel on the body of the extinguisher and by their horn, which must be directed towards the fire but not held in the event of frost. Some new types of CO2 fire extinguishers have frost-free horns as an additional safety feature. The most common mixture of fire extinguishers for effective fire fighting is water or foam next to a CO2 fire extinguisher.

Dry powder fire extinguishers are the most flexible types of extinguishers and are capable of extinguishing flammable solids, liquids, gases, and electrical fires. They are often recommended for use on vehicles and at home, but although they are versatile, powder extinguishers are not recommended for use in enclosed spaces or on sensitive electrical equipment if other types more suitable fire extinguishers are available. Powder fire extinguishers are distinguished by their blue panel and work by smothering the fire and preventing re-ignition
