Laboratory flasks are vessels or containers that fall into the category of laboratory equipment known as glassware. In laboratory and other scientific terms, they are usually called simply flasks. Flasks come in different shapes and a wide range of sizes, but a common distinguishing aspect in their shapes is the wider “body” of the vessel and one (or sometimes more) narrower section of the tube in the upper part, called the neck with a opening at the top. The dimensions of laboratory flasks are determined by the volume that they can hold, usually in metric units, such as milliliters (mL or ml) or liters (L or l). Laboratory flasks are traditionally made of glass, but can also be made of plastic.

At the opening(s) in the upper part of the neck of some glass flasks, such as round-bottom flasks, retorts or sometimes measuring flasks, there are outer (or covering) conical grooves of frosted glass. Some flasks, in particular volumetric flasks, come with a laboratory rubber stopper, bucket or lid to close the opening at the top of the neck. Such covers can be made of glass or plastic. Glass corks usually have the corresponding pointed inner (or male) surface of sanded glass, but often only with cork quality. Flasks not provided with such corks or caps may be closed with a rubber bung or cork stopper.

Flasks can be used to prepare solutions or to holding, containing, collecting or sometimes measure bulk chemicals, samples, solutions, etc. For chemical reactions or other processes such as mixing, heating, cooling, dissolving, precipitating, boiling (as in distillation) or analysis.
