A football player, often known as a footballer, is a sportsperson who participates in one of the several kinds of football. Association football, American football, Canadian football, Australian rules football, Gaelic football, rugby league, and rugby union are the primary kinds of football.

There are an estimated 250 million association football players globally, with many more participating in other sports.

Football, according to Jean-Pierre Papin, is a “global language.” Footballers draw enormous groups of fans worldwide and at nearly any level, and they are the focal points of extensive social phenomena such as association football culture.

Footballers often begin their careers as amateurs, with the top players progressing to professional status. Scouts usually start with a young squad (any local team) and offer contracts depending on ability and talent. Some players improve their football skills after being signed, and a select number will play for senior or professional clubs.

Some of the best men’s leagues pay substantially more than other occupations. The average salary in the Premier League is around $1 million per year. Some players make up to $6 to $8 million per year with the biggest teams in European football divisions. These teams’ greatest players may earn up to $70 million each year.

Only a small percentage of men’s professional football players get compensated at this level. In other divisions and leagues, wages are likely to be significantly lower, and a large percentage of players are semi-professional. For example, in Major League Soccer (which began in 2009), the average yearly wage for footballers in 2013 was $148,693, with considerable differences based on player position (goalkeepers, for example, made $85,296, while forwards got $251,805).

Women’s leagues have considerably less popularity and average earnings. As of January 2017, players in the National Women’s Soccer League (NWSL) (which began in 2012) earned between $15,000 and $40,000 a year.

A small percentage of former footballers continue to work full-time in the sport, such as as football managers. Former first-team baseball players were overrepresented as top-ranking executives in their firms, according to a 1979 research, and had higher economic mobility than second-teamers and reserves.
