French fries or simply fries (North American English), chips (British and English Commonwealth), potato finger chips (Indian English) or french-fried potatoes are batonnet or allumette-cut deep-fried potatoes.

French fries are served hot, soft, or crispy, and are usually eaten as part of a lunch or dinner, or as snack, and are usually served on the dinner menu, fast food restaurants, pubs, and bars. They are usually salted and, depending on the country, can be served with ketchup, vinegar, mayonnaise, tomato sauce or other local dishes.

Fries can be topped more heavily, as in dishes with poutine or chili cheese fries. Chips can be made from kumara or other sweet potatoes instead of potatoes. The baked variant, oven chips, use less oil or no oil at all. A very common fast-food dish is fish with chips.

Do French Fries Come From France?

The French gave the world the hot air balloon, a sewing machine and a bikini. They even gave the Statue of Liberty to the United States. However, one thing the French cannot claim is the French fry.

Despite its name, French fries is not French. The origin of fries is traced back to Belgium, where historians claim that potatoes were being fried in the late-1600s.

According to local Belgian lore, poor villagers living in the Meuse Valley often ate small fried fish that they caught in the river. In the winter months, the river freezes, making fishing impossible and forcing residents to look for other food sources.

Enter the potatoes. The villagers turned to the root plant, chopped it and fried in the same way as they prepared the fish. And this is how the earliest French fries were born.

French fries are one of the most popular side dishes in the world. When it comes to dipping, french fries are often coated with ketchup, mayonnaise or vinegar, but this seems to be a universal preference.

In Belgium, people prefer to eat fried potatoes with cooked mussels or a fried egg on top. The United Kingdom is famous for its “fish and chips.” In the Middle East, french fries are wrapped in pita bread with chicken, and in France, they are served with grilled steak. Canadians serve poutine, a dish of french fries and cheese curds, topped with brown gravy!
